5 Things I Do for a Good Night’s Sleep

We’ve all been there. Tossing and turning in bed when you’re so tired but still sleep still doesn’t come. Your mind may race, your body may feel restless, or you’re just frustrated from so desperately trying to sleep. Those nights are no fun but when I have them, I have a few trusted things in my toolbox that I use to unwind.

1. Get comfy cozy

I think many can agree with me that it’s a great feeling to change out of work clothes and into something more comfortable. I love to take a warm shower before bed to end my day and then put on cozy pajamas. I’m ALL about soft materials, cozy sweatpants, the whole thing. I also love putting this comfort essential oils blend on the bottoms of my feet — so relaxing! If your body feels comfortable, you emotionally and physically feel more relaxed.

2. Create a relaxing environment

I’ve heard the phrase “a physical space reflects your emotional state,” which I think is true. Taking a few minutes to tidy up your bedroom space will make you feel less cluttered and more at ease before bed. Then dim the lights, light candles or diffuse essential oils. I think this tip may help me the most! It’s such a nice change from bright artificial lighting and creates a sense of calm in your space.

3. Wind down yoga flow

I mentioned this in a blog post last week, but I love doing this short YouTube video to relax and breathe. It’s so gentle you can even do it in your pajamas.

4. Read before bed

I’ve used reading as a way to help me fall asleep for as long as I’ve been able to read! Reading is the best way to unplug and give yourself time to settle down in bed. Once I start reading, it’s time for my phone to go away. Cell phones and social media are stimulating, which is not conducive to falling asleep. Try to put the phone down and pick up a good book; I promise you’ll fall asleep much faster!

5. Sleep Stories

This is the only exception to phones because you have to use an app 🙂 If you’re having a really difficult time quieting your mind, try listening to a Sleep Story on the Calm app. It’s essentially the adult version of being read a bedtime story. I prefer to listen to these over an audiobook or a podcast because they are less stimulating and created to help you fall asleep. The Calm meditation app has dozens of sleep stories in various lengths. I typically fall asleep a few minutes in!
